Swiss luxury watch company Richard Mille has unveiled a new mechanical watch and claims to be the world’s thinnest mechanical watch. The RM UP-01 Ferrari made by courtesy of a partnership between Richard Mille and Ferrari. This new ultra-thin timepiece is a mere 1.75mm in thickness .
The watch’s skeletonized baseplate and bridges are constructed from an alloy that is 90 percent titanium, six percent aluminum and four percent vanadium. The combination, which is frequently used in advanced aerospace applications, boosts the material’s strength compared to commercially pure titanium.
This watch has assembled the entire movement, itself just 1.18mm thick, into the case – instead of the caseback doubling as a baseplate which is the usual procedure. The ultra-flat Calibre RMUP-01 features hours, minutes, seconds, and a function selector all spread across the broad, impossibly thin, case design. The movement plate used for this watch is skeletonized and underwent a litany of strength tests which allow it to withstand accelerations of over 5,000 Gs.
RM watches are known for their crazy lightness and capability. For comparison, an Apple Watch Series 7 is 10.7mm thick. You could stack six of these together and it still wouldn’t be as thick as one Apple Watch.
