1. Introduction

Attock city is the Administrative Headquarters of Attock District. It is located on bank of Indus River. Attock was founded in 1904 several miles southeast to the older city of Attock Khurd which had been established by Mughal Emperor Akbar in the 16th century. Attock was formerly known as Campbellpur which was initially named in hounour of Sir Colin Campbell, the British Commander-in-Chief of India. Attock is located in the north of Punjab province. Attock is turkish word means “Foot of the Mountain”.

Population

Attock is the 61th Largest city of Pakistan by population. The population of Attock District is 1,886,378 by 2017 census.

Mineral Resources

First oil discovery in District Attock was made in 1915 at Khaur point by Attock Oil Company. Attock Oil Company was the UK-domiciled company. Now all the exploration and production activities are carried out by Pakistan Oilfields Limited (POL).

Calcite is the stable form of calcium carbonate at all the temperatures and pressures. In kala Chitta Range, District Attock, calcite is found in abundance in pure form.

Building Material (Building Stone Gravel and Sand), Coal, Limestone, Dolomite, China clay resources are also available in District Attock.

Sand depending on its size and material properties is used in various sectors, i.e. in roads, concrete buildings, bricks making, and the glass industry.

The Attock district covers an area of 6,857 square kilometers.
